    Anti-Vibration System

    Pre-Separation Air Filtration System
This time-saving technology boosts the efficiency of the engine’s filter system, doubling the time between air filter cleanings. Air drawn into the engine is first separated via centrifugal force, ejecting the heavier dirt particles before being routed to the air filter. This pre-separation means less dirt to be captured by the air filter, resulting in less frequent cleaning and maintenance.

    Side-Access Chain Tensioner
The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.
  • Zoom
Toolless fuel and oil caps with retainers
Simply lift the lever and twist the caps to remove or tighten. There‘s no need to use a tool to tighten or loosen.

Important Information
WARNING! The occurrence called “kickback” can cause serious or fatal injury. Always read the instruction manual carefully before using your saw. STIHL uses a green and yellow color-coding system to help you select a powerhead, bar and chain combination that complies with the kickback requirements of ANSI Standard B175.1 (gasoline-powered saws) and §30 of UL 1662/ ANSI Standard B175.1 (electric chainsaws). Ask your STIHL dealer about safe operating procedures and the advantages of the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake, STIHL Quickstop® Plus (Q) additional chain braking feature, STIHL reduced kickback bars and STIHL low-kickback saw chains.

STIHL recommends the use of green reduced kickback bars and green low kickback chains on all STIHL chainsaws.
* The actual listed guide bar length can vary from the effective cutting length based on which powerhead it is installed on.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product. Bought a 028 in 1977 and have been using it regularly until last week!! Great saw and I will get it running again after replacing insulating mounts and carb. The new 291 I bought is very similar but a lot more plastic. After warming up, it will not restart unless I choke it again. Then half choke and pull 2-3 times to get it running. Hopefully after some break in it will be easier to start warm. Good power and just right for me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Some flimsy parts I have owned several Stihl saws, trimmers and blowers. I still have an 029 farm boss the has cut a lot of firewood over the last 15+ years. I might add that it still runs. There only thing I dislike about my new 291 is the choke lever. Very very cheap. I know that it will eventually break off. There only other problem I have is that it doesn't start well when warm. It does sometimes while idling the takes a few pulls to get it going again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Tool I own 5 chainsaws, the Stihl MS 291 is by far the best of the bunch. Easy to start, has enough power to cut my toughest trees.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what's expected from a Stihl product. Nice intermediate saw with plenty of power to tackle pretty much any task around the property. The AV system is great, I cut and bucked for a few hours and felt no fatigue in my hands or forearms from vibration. I would recommend this saw to family and friends.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great saw, but I think I'm unlucky Within the first hour, I had broken the chain tensioning (bar advance) screw. About 20 hours later, I was having hot stopping issues (which I corrected by adding more oil and making it a 32:1 mix, it seems the engine was over-heating from the standard ethanol fuel I was using). The day after the fuel mix and overheating issue was corrected, the sprocket exploded and chewed up the chain. Sprocket was easy enough to replace. A few days later I one handed the handle pulling the bar out of a cut (wood was tipping, I had to arrest it with my left hand), and I guess because of the leverage from my grip behind the throttle, the plastic cracked. Still works, I just have to be gentle when I poke my boot toe in to start it. Other than that, darn fine saw, would highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love my 291 chainsaw It is light weight but very powerful. It is just what I needed for all the work I have to do with the large trees in my yard.I love how easy it is to start! All of the controls and fill ports on the machine are intuitively placed. It is the best experience I have had with a chainsaw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Power to weight ratio deciding factor Own several Stihl saws, ms660, 044, and ,026. With my 026 getting tired after many many years of use (purchased Dec1988) and used constantly since, I decided to replace it. I chose the ms291 because of the power to weight ratio. I ordered it with a 16 inch bar and 325x063 chain. At total rough weight of 14lbs not only is it a great limbing saw but a great climbing saw as well. My only con is the fact that it's made of plastic. the magnesium body of my 026 is still fully intact after many years of use, only time will tell if the plastic material the body of the ms291 is made of will last as long.
